It takes a little extra effort to get here, but the rewards are worth it. The beautiful countryside and traditional way of life offer a unique experience of the real Japan.

When using a navigation device you can use the address and / or the phone number of the Miyama tourist association (or the address of your accommodation).
The tourist association is located centrally in the Miyama region, and is a convenient place to arrive with a public toilet, shop and gasoline stand all in one location.

Miyama is located about 50 kilometres from Kyoto train station.
By car, the journey from Kyoto takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Miyama area is around 140 kilometres in circumference so it may take a bit longer depending on your exact destination.

From Kyoto station there are two routes.

The first follows route 9 and then the highway (Kyoto Jyukando towards Fukuchiyama this is a toll road)- get off the highway at Sonobe and follow signs for Hiyoshi (route 19). Follow route 19 until you get to Miyama, then it will depend on where you want to visit within Miyama.

The scenic route takes about the same time from central Kyoto, but is a little harder to find your way and not recommended in bad weather, or if you are not a confident driver as the road is narrow and windy in places. This route follows route 162 towards Keihoku, then just stay on 162 all the way to Miyama. Finding 162 from Kyoto City is the tricky part, you will need a map or a navigation device. Its quite a fun route though and the views are more interesting than the highway.

If you are using public transport:

There are buses, but they are infrequent and not easy to negotiate unless you are used to travelling in Japan.
Take a local or rapid train along the JR Saganoline to Sonobe from Kyoto JR station, which takes about 40 minutes. The JR line is covered by the JR Rail Pass.
Most trains require a transfer at Sonobe or Hiyoshi station.
From Hiyoshi station take a Nantan City Bus into Miyama (50 minutes, 610 yen single ticket to Kita).
A few buses depart from Sonobe Station instead of Hiyoshi Station. (60minutes, 920 yen single ticket to Kita).
